Ximending and Taipei Main Station are possibly the two most common and popular accomm locations for tourists. After initial years favouring Ximending (when I used to shop here), I have grown to appreciate the latter as a base for travel to other parts of Taiwan. One accommodation I have experienced here, for generous space for self, one or two travelmates, or family members in tow, is iTaipei Service Apartment 京站酒店式公寓.
My take on iTaipei 京站公寓:
Location | Right behind Taipei Main Station, in the same building as QSquare 京站 (mall) and Taipei Bus Terminal 台北转运站, and connected underground to the MRT, airport MRT, TRA and HSR, this is a good place to stay if your travel plan includes plenty of commuting via railway.
Proximity to shops and F&B | While this is also true of Ximending, the variety and profile of shops and F&B are a little different from the former. The area span on foot is also wider, if you explore the vicinity from the other side of Taipei Main Station (i.e the tuition centre zone and Shin Kong Mitsukoshi 新光三越) all the way towards Zhongshan MRT Station (Zhongshan underground mall, Eslite R79, Eslite Nanxi mall, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Nanxi and more). Even when breakfast is not provided at this service apartment, I had no difficulty finding food at close proximity.
Wide choice of rooms | Ranging from double, triple (1 double room + 1 single room) to quadraple (2 double rooms), you can try to request for your preferred interior decor if booking directly with the operator. (I booked through www.booking.com and on their official website before, didn't seem to have a cost difference.)
Amenities | The inroom washer and dryer really help if you are travelling with kids, or during cold season, or for a long period of time. Personally, I enjoy the flexibility to pack less clothes and have laundry done mid or end trip (so that I have less to do back home). Free detergent powder is available upon request from the 5F Reception, and make good use of the iron and ironing board in-room.
Finding your way to iTaipei Service Apartment 京站酒店式公寓:
- If you are underground at Taipei Main Station 台北车站, look out for directional signages to QSquare 京站, Civic Blvd 市民大道 or Taipei Bus Terminal 台北转运站. These are nearest to exit Y1 & Y3. (Side note: the pathway underground is wheelchair/stroller/large suitcase-friendly with escalators, elevators and ramps.)
- If you are cabbing here, alight at Taipei Bus Terminal 台北转运站 or QSquare 京站 (mall) - no harm adding 'Taipei Main Station 台北车站' just to be sure the cabbie doesn't bring you somewhere else :-) The latter will likely be a drop-off at Palais de Chine Hotel 君品酒店, a 5-star hotel adjoining QSquare. (Note: there are several service apartment operators within the same building, some without a check-in reception like iTaipei's, so don't assume cabbies know every single one located here.)

The 1F floor reception opens at 8am and closes at 10pm. Out of these hours, you can still call the 5F Reception for assistance.

<Below> The 5F Reception can handle check-out, unless you require luggage deposit in which case you'll need to head down to 1F Reception. There is a snack and coffee bar here, as well as items like washing detergent or portable luggage scale for loan.

Upon checking in at the 1F Reception, a service personnel will chaperone you to your room. There are two main access points - BOTH have a security post and require your key card.

<Below> The other resident entrance, depending on which block you are staying, is through QSquare, past Starbucks and a Tax Refund/Customer Service office. You are also required to tap your token to access the glass door, though the security guard on duty may grant you access.
