Ranking high on any Tainan must-dos is Shen Nong Street 神农街, well within walking distance from Yong Le Market 永乐市场, making it a good next stop after a leisurely breakfast or brunch at said marketplace. Most of the shops at Shennong Street open from noon, but do check the official website or FB of your planned destination to avoid unforseen rest days. If you are here for a shutter-happy stroll, a couple of hours should suffice - slightly longer if you plan to chill out at some cafe.

In olden Tainan, Shen Nong Street 神农街 was part of the bustling five-canal trading zone. The precinct's glamour may have gone into history, but the cluster of old shophouses has been breathed new life, now home to quirky little shops, eateries, cafes and the distinctive Aranzi Hotel. Popular with youngsters and definitely an IG-worthy destination, the ambience is quite different by day and night (though I've only been here by day so far).

Hid from the scorching sun at a shophouse-turned-museum, giving a glimpse of past life in this part of Tainan.

And the iconic Aranzi Hotel 阿朗基公寓 (sadly, they ceased operations in Jun 2018) where we sought respite from the sun over afternoon tea. I am a fan of Aranzi Aronzo characters, but admittedly more for their merchandise rather than F&B. Personally, I will moderate expectations of their cafes, but their cakes and beverages are still worth a try.

Another popular cafe - FatCat Story 肥猫故事馆 - which I visited successfully only upon my third visit to Tainan (reminder about random rest days, again)! Opened by a cat lover, no doubt, you will find many beautiful photos of the owner and her felines here. The place was not packed on a weekday, and it was really nice to unwind for a couple of quiet hours, over a drink and some cake.
