To the east of Taichung city lies a mountain town covering less than 70km² - Xinshe district 新社区, affectionately known as the garden of Taichung (台中后花园). At an altitude of between 400-1000 metres, and counting a population less than 24,000, Xinshe 新社 has enough attractions and lodgings to warrant a stayover, surely not just during the town's annual Xinshe Flower Fest 新社花海 season.

My interest in this garden town in the mountains was piqued first by Lavender Cottage 薰衣草森林 and later by Xinshe Flower Fest 新社花海 (not to be mistaken with Zhongshe Flower Garden 中社观光花市, in the Taichung district of Houli 后里), unravelling a destination worthy of a two-night stay in 2014 (and this restrospective post after my blog started in 2016).
▲ Within an hour ride from either Taichung HSR Station (台中高铁站) or Taichung TRA Station (台中台铁/火车站), this was my most time and cost effective choice of transport as I had the company of one or two friends over three visits, including this two-night stay.
▼ Other than the annual flower fest, Xinshe 新社 upholds its reputation as Taichung's garden with many beautiful cafes and attractions. In addition, it is known for local produce such as mushrooms and grapes, both of which I love. I had a comfortable number of destinations planned for a two-night stay, as follow. Located at the "entry point" of Xinshe 新社, this Zen-themed restaurant makes a good start or end to the mountain town staycay when driving up or down hill. Click here for my separate post.

Also known as Xinshe Castle, this is possibly one of the most popular attractions in town, great for strolling a couple of leisurely hours, or more if you are dining in. Click here for my separate post.
